It’s official: The ESSENCE Cultural Festival returns live to New Orleans!
After switching to a virtual experience in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the ESSENCE Festival will host an all-live gathering for the first time in two years from June 30 – July 3, 2022, celebrating the culture and resilience of the black community with the theme “It’s black joy for me!” Additionally, the ESSENCE Culture Festival will continue to provide a comprehensive and engaging digital experience for attendees live and around the world.
“The reimagining of the 2022 ESSENCE Culture Festival in New Orleans as a phygital experience – all physical and all digital – will be epic,” said Caroline Wanga, CEO of Essence Communications, Inc. “Given this that we have collectively experienced over the past two years, the opportunity to come together and rise in the spirit of culture, equity, celebration – and joy – is more of a privilege and an honor than it never has been. We look forward to returning home to the city of New Orleans and strengthening our impact as a cornerstone of black culture, entrepreneurship and economic inclusion – always working to deeply serve black women and communities.
The unparalleled live experience will include nearly one million square feet of space for empowerment programming (networking, finance, career, wellness, fashion, beauty and more) at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, des nightly concerts at Caesar’s Superdome and other entertaining and inspiring programs. activations in locations across the city. The Festival’s robust digital programming will include live streaming of select New Orleans field activities, as well as new and exclusive digital content and experiences created for live and virtual audiences.

Launched in 1995 as an event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine, the ESSENCE Culture Festival has since grown into the world’s largest celebration of Black women, culture and communities. Regularly bringing together more than 530,000 people a year during the 4th of July weekend in New Orleans, the ESSENCE Culture Festival is now also the nation’s largest festival by daily attendance.
